Am I Jewish in the Eyes of the Chief Rabbinate? A look into non-Orthodox conversion and Aliyah.

Presented by Orly Erez-Likhovski

For many years, the path to Israeli citizenship and privileges has been particularly bumpy to non-Orthodox Jews - to those who made Aliyah or to those who underwent a Reform conversion (especially in Israel). The ultra-Orthodox influence on Israel’s religious, immigration, and naturalization policies, have been undermining what should be the right of every Jew.

IRAC is active in this area and has achieved many victories over the years.

In this webinar, we will discuss:

  • The role of IRAC's Legal Aid Center for Olim, immigrants, (LACO) in providing legal aid to non-Orthodox Jews who have made Aliyah;

  • Our work providing aid to women victims of domestic abuse and widows who lost their partners before completing the naturalization process;

  • The lack of recognition of non-Orthodox conversions by the Chief Rabbinate.

Does the Jewish State Treat All Jews Equally? The legal status of the Reform Movement in Israel.

Presented by Orly Erez-Likhovski

Despite the Reform movement arguably being the largest in world Jewry, it has never received much support from the Israeli government or the Chief Rabbinate. For many years, Reform Jews in Israel have suffered discrimination and even violence, and IRAC has endured many legal struggles on the way. Our persistence is beginning to pay off, as things are beginning to develop in a positive and more cordial direction. Nonetheless, the status quo still prevails in Israeli society today.

This webinar will reflect on the current legal status of the Reform Movement in Israel. We will address the challenges of having Reform conversions and weddings recognized; equal governmental funding; and the challenges facing our congregations. We will also discuss our plans to work with the new Israeli government on these issues.
